Under a Gull's Wing

Under a Gull's wing contains 117 poems and more than two dozen phototgraphs that take readers on an evocative trip "down the shore", from the tip of Sandy Hook to Victorian Cape May. The contributers include not only some of the nation's best known poets--Walt Whitman, John Ciardi, Robert Pinsky (the nation's new Poet Laureate), A.R. Ammons, Maxine Kumin, and Alicia Ostriker, among others -- But also many lesser-known poets whose work will undoubtedly earn them future acclaim.

A mix of celebration, lament, and history, Under a Gull's Wing presents all of the shore's various aspects, from the natural beauty of Island Beach State Park and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge to the urban decay of Asbury Park and Atlantic City. Even such quirky history as Lucy the Margate Elephant and the High-Diving Horse of Atlantic City's old steel pier are remembered and explored.
